WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH HAITI PARTNERSHIP MINISTRY TEAM POLICIES

  • Christian commitment: Ideally, we would like committed Christians on the team, but as a Haitian pastor has said, “I will never stop anyone who wants to come and help our people"! Therefore, we do require that anyone who comes on our teams be supportive of our goals.

  • Age: Anyone over the age of 18 is eligible to go.  If someone is 16 or 17 years old and accompanied by a parent, they can be considered.

  • Team make-up:  We need at least one team leader, one medical provider and one spiritual director and willing participants to fulfill the needs.

  • Financial responsibility: The cost to the team member can be paid in increments, with the first half due three months before the trip and the last half due one month ahead of time unless special arrangements are made.

  • Refund policy: If the team member cancels before the airline tickets have been purchased, a full refund can be given.  If the cancellation occurs before two weeks prior to leaving, half the money will be refunded, but no refund can be given if the cancellation occurs less than two weeks before the departure.  If WPC cancels the trip, the leaders will decide the refund policy.

  • Leadership: Team members are always under the leadership of the team leader, who will make decisions in conjunction with the in-country pastor.

  • Driving vehicles in Haiti: Team leaders will appoint drivers.

  • Orientation: All team members are to attend the orientation, unless special circumstances exist.

  • Smoking, alcohol & drugs: Team members are to refrain from any of these activities that would be detrimental to the goals of the mission.

  • Leaving the compound: Team members are not to leave the compound or other facilities without the knowledge of the team leader.

  • Team travel in-country: This is extremely dangerous.  The roads can at times be brutal, if not almost impassable, and extremely dusty. It is not surprising to come suddenly upon an accident, or to see vehicles abandoned in the middle of the road (often with a warning of a small branch or rock several yards in front, particularly on a curve).  There is also the risk of piracy and physical danger at night.

The following in-country travel recommendations are suggested:

o       If there are several vehicles, trucks, etc, transporting team members and supplies, every effort should be made to travel together.

o       There should be no travel at night, except in emergency situations.

o       Seat belts, if available, should be worn at all times.

o       No one should travel in the back of a truck, unless approved by the team leader.
