What would cause a team of Americans to regularly visit Terre Blanche, a small rural village in the northern Haiti, where poverty, malnutrition, intestinal parasites, scabies, malaria and other infectious diseases run rampant? The village is in a remote corner of the world where the closest medical care is hours away; drought is a continual problem. There has never been any electricity, potable water or a national school. Why go to an area with no viable economy, with no Christian witness, and where voodoo is the accepted way of life? Why go? Because they have been called by Christ to go. In 1996, a group from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Yakima, Washington sent a medical/dental team to the village of Terre Blanche in Haiti. Seeing the need and noting the absence of hope in that place, the team asked if they could take on the task of feeding the 65 children in the new school on an on-going basis. As a result of this one question, an adopt-a-village ministry was born. In the last seven years, this group has formed a partnership with the Haitian Free Methodist Church. Together they have seen: § The school grow to over 450 students with eight fully funded teachers. § The completion of two furnished five-room school buildings and a canteen, where the children receive one hot, clean meal per day (probably their only meal). § A new well gushing with good water. § Health care by a visiting nurse to each family. § Two or more yearly visits of medical/dental/Bible school teams. § The establishment of a women’s trade school with 40 students. § A growing church body with a particular outreach to the villagers involved in voodoo. When hearing the word “Haiti,” many people wonder if it’s even possible to make a difference. This group would reply with a resounding “Yes!” You, too, could make a difference. Jesus tells us in Matthew 19 that “with man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
